Quick BGLK history lesson: this all started when I was listening to a podcast. For those of you who are new here, you wouldn’t remember how I was touched by the story of Adnan Syed, the man whose plight within the legal system was told through the podcast Serial, the show that started the podcasting boom we’re seeing today. I, like the rest of the public, listened to all the episodes and sat riveted at what had gone wrong with that case.
In an interview for that series, Adnan talked about having learned to create a life within a prison, although it isn’t the life he would have wanted to have. At the time I was living a life I didn’t want to live. I was trapped in a cycle of poor mental health management, isolation, and depression. When I heard his words I decided to take a chance and begin on the blog I’d been envisioning. You all are here because of that.
I’ve always dreamed of having a podcast of my own. Some of you got to listen to me as I hosted someone else’s for a few months. I loved it, but it is important to me to maintain creative control as much as possible. So often, when marginalized groups make content it goes through several filters of privilege before it is distributed to us. Usually, it arrives watered down from its original impact.
I choose not to create that way.
It’s been a long time coming, you’ve been waiting and so have I. For years, I’ve been in love with the podcasting format but I wasn’t quite ready to put the time in to create a show with the quality I want to put out. After all, a girl’s gotta guard her yes – with her LIFE.
Now the time is finally here! Speaking of time, this new podcast is PROUDLY sponsored by Tiimo, a paid subscription app that helps you organize your life, stick to your routines, and work towards your personal goals in a visual and motivating way!
